As we celebrate this Fourth of July, Allegiance Home Health wants to ensure you and your loved ones enjoy a happy, healthy, and safe holiday. With the summer heat, pesky mosquitoes, and dazzling fireworks, it’s important to stay informed and prepared.
Here are some tips to help you stay safe and well during the festivities:
HEAT AND SUN
Heat and sun can cause skin damage, skin cancer, and serious illness, but there are ways to enjoy the summer and stay protected.
- Sunscreen: Use sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and UVA/UVB protection. Reapply every two hours and after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Never leave children or pets in a hot car.
- Heatstroke Awareness: Call 911 if someone shows signs of heatstroke, such as dizziness, nausea, headache, fatigue, and confusion.
- Community Care: Check on family members, older adults, and neighbors to ensure they are safe and well.
MOSQUITOES
Mosquitoes and summer go hand in hand in Florida.
- Repellents: Use insect repellents or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. Apply sunscreen first, then insect repellent.
- Protective Clothing: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting long sleeves, pants, and socks to prevent mosquito bites.
- Standing Water: Regularly tip and toss standing water to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and reduce the spread of illnesses.
FIREWORKS
Fireworks light up the sky on the 4th of July, but they are best left to the professionals.Â
- Impairment Precautions: Do not use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
- Safety Distance: Never allow young children to handle fireworks or sparklers Light fireworks away from people, houses, and flammable materials. Light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance.
- Disposal: Soak both spent and unused fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding.
- Sparklers Hazard: Sparklers can reach temperatures of 2000 degrees, posing a serious burn risk. Handle with care.
